WAUSAU, Wis., March 22, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Laser 2013 will offer a session on Photodynamic Therapy, Friday, April 5, as part of the 33rd Annual Conference of the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS), April 3-7, 2013, Boston, MA.
The session will review fundamentals of PDT mechanisms of action, current therapeutic interventions and potential future applications.
"Hot Topics" include techniques to improve clinical outcomes of PDT, means to minimize treatment related side effects, state-of-the-art illumination techniques, PDT, gene therapy and nanoparticles, and viral ghost PDT.
Ron R. Allison, M.D., Co-Director, commented, "Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) treats disease through the use of light. In cancer patients PDT not only can destroy the tumor but unlike other oncologic therapies allows for outstanding organ preservation and cosmesis. This means that a patient with skin cancer undergoing PDT will likely not have a scar or the patient treated for lung cancer will retain a functioning lung. The PDT session at the ASLMS will review and highlight state of the art PDT in cancer and other diseases." Dr. Allison is the Medical Director at 21st Century Oncology in Greenville, NC.
The session is designed for clinicians, scientists and students interested in photodynamic therapy.
"Photodynamic therapy provides a critically important treatment option for skin cancer, pre-cancers, and acne to name a few skin diseases. In this session, attendees are brought up to date on the standard of care for treating conditions with PDT. In addition, therapeutic developments in PDT that are in the pipeline are discussed," said Macrene R. Alexiades-Armenakas, M.D., Ph.D., Co-Director. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine. She founded and directs Dermatology and Laser Center, NY, NY. Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas is an ASLMS Fellow and is on the Strategic Planning Board.
Conference registration is $490 for members or applicants, $525 for active members of the U.S. military and $750 for non-members. Students and residents are admitted free of charge.
