Dallas Plastic Surgeons Attend Lecture for Advanced Rhinoplasty

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - May 17, 2013) - Dr. Jack Gunter, a Dallas plastic surgeon, has been contributing to the field of rhinoplasty for over 35 years. As the Medical Director of the Gunter Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Gunter remains actively involved with procedural planning and development of customized surgical plans for patients with unusual and complex problems in secondary rhinoplasty, along with his experienced lead surgeon, Dr. C. Spencer Cochran.

Recently, The Rhinoplasty Society held its 18th annual meeting in New York City for specialists in the field. Dr. Gunter was asked to be the President's Guest Lecturer at the event, where he presented a lecture titled "Evolution of a Personal Secondary Rhinoplasty Practice." This lecture is part of Dr. Gunter's continued commitment to educate rhinoplasty surgeons across the globe and help them develop the tools they need to provide the best possible care and results for their patients.

The Rhinoplasty Society, founded in 1996, is a non-profit organization with the mission of facilitating the exchange of ideas and techniques concerning rhinoplasty surgery. The society's annual meeting was meant to provide a forum for rhinoplasty specialists to submit papers in a peer-reviewed format and attend presentations led by prominent professionals in the field.

According to Dr. Gunter, directing a practice that offers secondary (or revision) rhinoplasty is essential to quality patient care when it comes to surgeons who are interested in rhinoplasty. Patients seek out secondary rhinoplasty when an original rhinoplasty procedure fails to meet expectations. However, due to the fact that secondary rhinoplasty is much more challenging than primary rhinoplasty, many plastic surgeons do not offer the procedure. Since the natural anatomy of the nose is no longer intact and the tissue planes present before the initial surgery are now filled with scar tissue, rebuilding the remaining nasal framework of bone and cartilage can be very difficult. Often, additional cartilage has to be taken from the ear or rib to get the best results. 

Secondary rhinoplasty procedures are more challenging to perform, and Dr. Gunter recognizes the need for specialists in this area. Patients pursue surgeons to address the functional and aesthetic concerns following the failure of the primary procedure. From Dr. Gunter's perspective, the surgeons who do perform secondary rhinoplasty procedures are those surgeons that have taken a special interest in rhinoplasty and have made it the primary operation in their practice -- which leads to special expertise in this complex and challenging operation.

Rhinoplasty performed by an unskilled or less-than-qualified plastic surgeon often results in more problems than it solves. In Dr. Gunter's experience, patients of such surgeons can often experience problems such as breathing difficulties following surgery. In addition, these patients may also have nasal asymmetry and exhibit an artificial or "operated-on" appearance. With their secondary rhinoplasty procedures, Dr. Gunter and Dr. Cochran seek to greatly improve unsatisfactory results and restore the natural look of the patient's nose.

Dr. C. Spencer Cochran is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He went on to specialize in nasal surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, where he served as Chief Resident of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. He continues his affiliation with the university as a Clinical Assistant Professor, teaching rhinoplasty techniques to other surgeons.
