AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Sep 4, 2013) - Common Sense, a blog run by the independent strategic communications firm WCG, recently released an article on doctors who use social media to initiate online discussions about cancer. Dr. Adam J. Mamelak, an Austin dermatologist, was listed among the top doctors involved in these conversations. When broken down by cancer type, dermatologists make up approximately 55% of the top 20 doctors using social media to discuss skin cancer. When those 20 doctors are broken down further, the MDigitalLife database reports that Dr. Mamelak is ranked the #2 most active doctor and the #1 most active dermatologist in the country in these online communications.
Dr. Mamelak says he has put a lot of effort into using the latest technological innovations to create a strong social media presence for his practice. In a recent blog post, titled "Using Social Media to Improve Patient Education," the practice explains that Dr. Mamelak's Twitter feed frequently provides followers with educational information on cancer-related topics such as tanning booth dangers, the sun's role in Vitamin D production, sunscreen application strategies, and how to keep sun protection fashionable during the summer.
According to the Common Sense article, "While the number of physicians who have 'activated' online is experiencing amazing growth, the overall numbers are still relatively small ... when we dig into specific topics it's possible for a relatively small number of physicians to dominate the conversation." The results of the analysis of these conversations show that 80% of the online content produced by medical professionals discussing cancer is written by 20% of the total population. In other words, although there were over 4 million tweets recorded by the study, a relatively small number of doctors generated the vast majority of this conversation.
Dr. Mamelak, the founder of Sanova Dermatology, says he keeps his practice equipped with the latest technology, but also uses technological advances outside of the office to keep his Austin dermatology patients informed. Through frequent clinical and laboratory research, Dr. Mamelak explains that he tries to remain at the forefront of the field's discoveries. Through his extremely active use of social media, he is leading the field in one of the newest ways to educate and engage with both current and prospective patients.
