Chicago Surgeon Treats Varicose Veins and Spider Veins With Innovative Laser Treatment

Dr. Jonathan Wallace Uses a Combination of Laser Therapy and Sclerotherapy Injections to Alleviate Pain From Varicose Veins and Reduce the Appearance of Spider Veins, Helping Patients Achieve Smoother, More Even-Toned Skin

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Sep 17, 2013) - Jonathan W. Wallace, MD is a board-certified surgeon at Suburban Surgical Care Specialist/Kane Center who helps patients to reduce the appearance of both varicose and spider veins. Since a person's veins become degraded over time, they may begin to appear enlarged and swollen. With the use of endovascular laser vein removal therapy and sclerotherapy injections, Dr. Wallace is able to treat enlarged veins and spider veins with advanced techniques designed to reduce the discomfort and aesthetic impact caused by these common conditions.

While compression stockings are typically used to treat varicose veins of the lower extremities, Dr. Wallace says this conservative form of therapy tends to be less effective than surgical intervention. The traditional surgical treatment of varicose veins involves the removal of the saphenous vein in the upper leg, followed by the individual extraction of any other large varicose veins. However, Dr. Wallace and his fellow surgeons at Suburban Surgical Care Specialists/Kane Center often use endovascular laser vein removal therapy to treat the condition. Sclerotherapy injections are used to shrink the affected blood vessels while an endovascular laser is used to target and remove the affected veins. Dr. Wallace notes that endovascular laser vein removal therapy patients often experience immediate relief from symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and cramping.

The same laser that is used to treat varicose veins can also be used to treat spider veins. Spider veins, which do not appear as enlarged as varicose veins, are smaller dilated blood vessels near the skin's surface that can develop on the nose, cheeks, legs, and other areas. They typically look blue, red, and/or purplish in color, and extend out from a center point -- often resembling a spider's web. Dr. Wallace treats spider veins in a series of sessions that typically last 15-30 minutes with a laser that is calibrated to specifically target these veins without damaging any untargeted cells on the skin's surface. The body will then reabsorb the remaining proteins of the targeted spider veins, ultimately working to provide smoother skin without visible signs of the veins. Depending on the severity of each skin care patient's condition, the number of sessions needed to complete the treatment vary.

Dr. Wallace highlights that vein treatments can significantly improve the appearance of a patient's skin with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime. "Patients can walk in, walk out, and return to their regular activities the next day," says Dr. Wallace. Using a combination of an office consultation and an ultrasound study, Dr. Wallace is able to offer vein treatment plans that are customized to each patient and often covered by many insurance plans, typically leaving them with skin that is younger-looking and more uniform in appearance.
