Aconex Appointed to Support Battersea Power Station

Aconex Will Provide Project Information Management for Iconic Central London Redevelopment

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Sep 17, 2013) - Aconex, provider of the world's most widely used project collaboration solutions for the construction, infrastructure, power, mining, and oil and gas industries, has been appointed to provide project support for the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. The landmark former power station is located on the River Thames in central London, opposite Chelsea and near the site of the new U.S. Embassy. The project, with an estimated gross development value of £8 billion GBP on completion, comprises seven phases over a 10-to-15-year period and will create 3,500 new homes, as well as retail stores, cafés, restaurants, offices, a library, a medical center, childcare facilities, and a six-acre public park. The project will also create 15,000 new jobs. The 39-acre development will be served by its own new London Underground rail station and a river bus pier, as well as existing road and rail connections.

The site developers will use the Aconex Online Collaboration Platform to drive and manage a consistent set of project processes and information across the development. The platform will provide a secure, neutral collaboration engine for all project communications, documents, drawings, and models, with automated workflows for review and approval and an audit trail of all decisions and actions. The developer and general contractors are currently using the system to support the bidding and tendering process -- from initiation of procurement through contract award -- for the engagement of consultants and subcontractors.

"We carried out a rigorous technical and commercial evaluation of vendors that provide construction project collaboration services," said Rob Tincknell, chief executive officer at Battersea Power Station. "We selected Aconex for two key reasons: 1) the strength of the platform and the infrastructure behind it, and 2) the company's proven track record with projects of this scope and visibility, including its ability to support our international supply chain requirements. People have very high expectations for the redevelopment of this world-famous location, so we have to make sure that the contractors we appoint are market leaders in quality, value and innovation. We believe that Aconex meets those criteria."

Iconic Site

Battersea Power Station began generating electricity from the burning of coal in 1933 and continued powering much of greater London until it was decommissioned in 1983. One of the largest brick buildings in Europe, the structure is rated Grade II* on the United Kingdom's statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historical interest. With its four chimney towers and distinctive, art deco design, Battersea Power Station has been featured in numerous music videos, record album covers and films, including Batman: The Dark Knight, The King's Speech, Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage, and the Bollywood blockbuster Ra One.

"Battersea Power Station is an icon of the London landscape, and being involved in its redevelopment is prestigious for us," said Hervé Hamelin, general manager of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Aconex. "The project is also a significant win in the U.K. market, where we've steadily built our presence over the last couple of years. We look forward to helping Battersea Power Station manage the project efficiently and make sure that the restoration of the power station and the redevelopment of its 39-acre site is delivered successfully."
