PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwired - Oct 9, 2013) - The IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP), advancing and accelerating market adoption of standards-conforming products, announces the official launch of the IEEE 1588™ Telecommunications Certification Program. The IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program has been developed to validate the conformance of IEEE 1588-2008 implementations in telecommunications environments, with a focus on the requirements for synchronization in high growth, packet-based, mobile backhaul networks.
"IEEE-ISTO is excited to be supporting the telecommunications industry with the launch of the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program," said Marco W Migliaro, President and CEO, Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO). "The program is expected to increase confidence and improve consistency in the evaluation and procurement of telecommunications products."
Addressing the requirements of ITU-T Recommendation G.8265.1 (Precision Time Protocol Telecom Profile for Frequency Synchronization), the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program is the industry's first certification program specifically designed to assess and validate a product's compliance to IEEE 1588-2008.
"The official launch of the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program by ICAP underscores the commitment to a comprehensive, industry-driven conformity assessment program leading to certification based on the IEEE standard," commented John Eidson, chair of the IEEE 1588 Standards Working Group. "An IEEE 1588 Telecommunications certificate of compliance offers the highest level of assurance in today's market to validate compliance to the IEEE 1588 standard."
The IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program provides significant benefits to both telecom operators and telecommunications systems solution vendors. Operators gain confidence knowing that certified products have undergone extensive testing to help establish functional consistency under multiple operational environments. The availability of an industry supported certification program may reduce the necessity for telecom operators to develop and manage their own testing and compliance programs, and therefore reduce the need for vendors to complete multiple service providers' separate test programs. This increases overall efficiency in the process for evaluating products.
ICAP, in its role as Certification Authority, certifies products that have successfully completed testing and deemed compliant. It also establishes the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program policies, manages the day-to-day activities of the program, establishes and licenses the certification mark, issues the Certificates of Compliance and maintains the certified products registry.
Leading the testing efforts of the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program is Iometrix, an independent test laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by A2LA. Iometrix was selected for this program based on their in-depth technical expertise developing and supporting standards-based testing and certification programs for the telecom industry.
"The launch of the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program represents an important milestone for the Timing and Synchronization industry and those who contributed to its development," commented Konstantinos Karachalios, Managing Director of the IEEE Standards Association. "Industry can benefit from a program that will increase confidence that a product will comply and perform as recommended by the standard."

About the IEEE Conformity Assessment Program
The IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP) is a program of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO). The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has invested in the development of ICAP through a Development Agreement with IEEE-ISTO, in furtherance of its mission to support its standards. ICAP provides programs and industry support that help bridge standards development activities with the conformity assessment activities that accelerate market acceptance and enablement of new products and technologies. ICAP programs are founded on industry best practices, internationally accepted quality systems and the use of proven test tools. Fostering the market acceptance, adoption and implementation of standardized technologies, ICAP spans the spectrum of today's smart grid, information and communications technologies.
