NEW YORK, Nov. 14, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
Grenaches of the World International Competition
In 2013, the Interprofessional Council for Roussillon Wine (Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon, CIVR) organized the first international "Grenaches of the World" competition. It was a huge success, with seven countries participating and over 360 samples tasted by eighty judges from across the globe. The competition confirmed the interest in this grape variety and has become an annual event.
A Global Contest
This noble grape variety is one of the most widely grown in the world. It is known as Grenache, as well as Garnacha, Garnatxa or Cannonau and can be found in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel, Algeria, Morocco, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and the United States. The competition aims to bring together the various categories of wines produced from this grape variety and to choose the finest examples. These wines are then highlighted and promoted, guaranteeing international recognition for the winning winemakers.
The competition is open to all categories of wine: still, sparkling, fortified, vins doux naturels, liqueur wines... and to all producing countries.
The wines will be blind tested by a panel of wine professionals and influential figures from around the world. Each judge will taste three series of wines, each with six to ten samples grouped by color, appellation and origin. The three prizes that will be awarded are the "Grand Gold Medal", "Gold Medal" and "Silver Medal".
Held in the Center of the Winemaking World
Roussillon, in the south of France, is a logical choice of venue for the annual Grenaches of the World International Competition, as it is the area most closely associated with vins doux naturels - Banyuls, Rivesaltes and Maury, found in the heart of Grenaches country. The event is organized by the CIVR in collaboration with several recognized partners.
