Parks Associates: 33% of U.S. Broadband Households See Value in Connected-Car Music Features

Parks Associates Senior Analyst to Present Connected Car and Mobile Research This Week at LTE North America and Connected Cars North America

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Nov 21, 2013) -  Research from Parks Associates shows 33% of U.S. broadband households are highly interested in connected-car features that include the ability to listen to online music/audio. Only 16% are very interested in online video features for passengers, but in both instances, interest skews strongly toward smartphone owners.

"One-third of car owners, and over 50% of luxury car owners, now have connected-car capabilities, and most of them use the features on at least a monthly basis," said Jennifer Kent, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates. "The ability to play MP3 files on the car stereo is most common by far, but communication features such as the ability to listen to texts/email read aloud are becoming more popular. Twenty percent of U.S. vehicle owners in broadband households have this feature."

Kent will be participating at LTE North America and Connected Cars North America this week in Dallas. The 2013 research "The Connected Car is Here" shows the most appealing connected-car features are those that provide navigation, vehicle performance information, and hands-free calling. Conversely, one-half of car drivers do not find website access or the ability to access news apps appealing.

"The rapid growth in smartphone adoption combined with the development of a robust app industry has educated consumers on the benefits and possibilities of in-car connectivity," Kent said. "Smartphone owners are far more likely to value connected car capabilities, and roughly three-quarters of those valuing connected car capabilities have smartphones."

Jennifer Kent will present new research at Connected Cars North America on Thursday, November 21, 3:10-3:40 P.M., "What Business Models will create Value in Connectivity for Consumers?", and 5:00-5:20 P.M., "Understanding the Requirements of In-Vehicle HMI."

She will also chair Track 1: Monetizing LTE at LTE North America on Friday, November 22.
