Lubrizol Presents "The Drive to More Efficient Lubricants"

At ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference

CLEVELAND, February 20, 2014 - The Lubrizol Corporation announces that Tom Curtis, vice president of Engine Additives, presented "The Drive to More Efficient Lubricants" at the 18th ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference on February 20, 2014. The global conference, taking place in London, focuses on the base oil, lubricants and additives industry.

Environmental, regulatory and technology drivers continue to place more demands on lubrication technology, which is being continually challenged to deliver efficiency performance criteria without compromising its fundamental protective properties.

As Curtis notes, "The evolution in hardware technology, and the often thinner oils that are required, demands that we focus in on how lubricant additives interact with and modify surfaces." He continues, "Lighter viscosity and changing operating conditions are causing a shift towards boundary lubrication, an area of operation where metal parts can be in direct contact with little to no lubricant in between. A major part of the protection and performance in these conditions involves additive technology systems, which actively lay down additive protective layers on metal surfaces. This is an essential area of focus, understanding and continued innovation for Lubrizol."

As explained in Curtis' presentation, this is an exciting new era for the lubricant industry. Base oils, performance polymers and advanced additive systems all have roles to play in enhancing total lubricant performance.  More breakthroughs are possible through novel additive chemistry, advanced testing and fundamental additive science. Substantial and sustained investments in technology R&D and advanced testing are key to continuing to deliver these necessary breakthroughs.
