Hawaiian Telcom Fires Up Hawai'i's Fastest Internet

Powered by $125 Million Investment in Its Next-Generation Fiber Network and Systems

HONOLULU, Feb. 25, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fueled by its rapidly expanding next-generation fiber network, today, Hawaiian Telcom (Nasdaq:HCOM) announced Hawaiʻi's fastest Internet, featuring speeds of up to 500 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 50 Mbps upload. Hawaiian Telcom's new speeds are exponentially higher than anything currently available in the local market.

"Hawaiian Telcom's expansive deployment of fiber optic technology is connecting Hawaiʻi to the world with speeds never before seen in the islands," said Eric K. Yeaman, Hawaiian Telcom's president and CEO. "We've invested $125 million in our next-generation fiber network and systems and there is more to come. As a committed local company with deep roots in the islands, Hawaiian Telcom is dedicated to meeting Hawaiʻi's bandwidth needs today and into the future."

Beginning on March 2, many Oʻahu consumers will be able to sign up for broadband speed tiers of 100, 300 and 500 Mbps, with even higher speeds available to businesses. Hawaiian Telcom will continue investing in its next-generation fiber network, expanding its reach every day.

Consumer demand for more bandwidth has exploded in recent years with the rapid adoption of connected devices, such as smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and Web-enabled TVs. According to a November 2013 study conducted by Cisco Systems Inc., the average U.S. household owns nine Internet-connected devices.

Businesses' need for higher Internet speeds has also increased as more companies flock to the cloud to lower IT costs, ensure business continuity and enable access to their systems from anywhere, anytime, on any device. They are also utilizing more demanding applications that require higher bandwidth.

Hawaiian Telcom's next-generation fiber network enables Hawaiʻi's fastest upload and download speeds, streaming of high-definition content and a superior experience with services such as video-conferencing and hosted applications.

With 500/50 Mbps (Download/Upload) speeds, customers can:

  • Download a 2 gigabyte high-definition video in less than 35 seconds compared to three minutes on 100/5 Mbps speed.
  • Upload a 1 gigabyte file to the cloud in less than three minutes compared to 28 minutes on 100/5 Mbps speed.

"In today's homes and offices, many devices and bandwidth-intense applications – streaming high-definition video, online gaming, and social networking -- are utilized simultaneously," said Yeaman. "With Hawaiian Telcom High-Speed Internet, our customers enjoy next-generation broadband access, opening up a whole new world of benefits and choices."

Hawaiian Telcom High-Speed Internet packages come with a wireless networking gateway, comprehensive Internet security software and access to local 24/7 technical support.
