The article states initially that farmers in the state are expected to idle up to 500,000 acres of cropland this year because of the current drought that is believed to be the worst in the 119 years that this aspect of the climate has been measured in the state.

This current drought comes off of a previous year in which moisture was also abnormally low, prompting Governor Brown to recently declare a state of emergency. He asked residents to voluntarily cut their water usage by 20 percent immediately as a response. The drought is also expected to prompt what is believed to be an unprecedented cutoff of state-supplied water that is currently sold to 29 irrigation districts and municipalities. The article goes on to state that there could be more cuts like this on the way.

These developments could lead to billions of dollars in overall losses and damages by way of a decreased crop of produce along with a rise in consumer prices for those products. In addition, these decisions could put the jobs of nearly 120,000 people at risk and put farms themselves in danger of failing to turn a profit during this growing and harvest season.
