How Can Patients Select the Appropriate Size for Breast Implants? Marietta Plastic Surgeon Explains

Many Plastic Surgery Patients Are Concerned About Choosing a Breast Implant Size That Could Be Too Large or Too Small; Dr. Thomas Lintner Discusses How He Helps Patients Make the Right Decision

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - Mar 19, 2014) - For individuals considering breast augmentation surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Thomas Lintner, MD says he spends a lot of time with each patient discussing breast implant size options. He explains that the majority of his patients express concern over choosing the right size. "A significant amount of time and consideration goes into selecting the right size for each of my patients. If they are unhappy with their decision later on, it isn't easy -- unfortunately, breast implants can't really be exchanged without a lot of hassle and expense," he says.

In a recent blog post, titled "Reducing Your Breast Implant Size," Dr. Lintner explains how some patients may choose to decrease the size of their breast implants because of lifestyle changes, such as getting married or having children. He notes that many women who have very active lifestyles might also elect to reduce the size of their implants, due to the fact that larger implants can get in the way.

Dr. Lintner continued his blog series in a follow-up post describing how he helps patients choose the right breast implant size prior to surgery. He says this initial step in the surgical process is crucial, and helps many patients avoid the need to exchange their implants later on. To help patients decide on a size they can be happy with in the long-term, Dr. Lintner says he often uses the Mentor Volume Sizing System, which allows patients to "try on" different sizes. He says this typically helps patients better understand the weight of different implants, as well as visualize what their surgical outcome can potentially look like.

When it comes to the actual size of silicone breast implants, Dr. Lintner explains that the same volume can be represented in ways that can create very different looks. For example, he says a 300cc gel implant can come in shapes that range from a small base with a large projection (high profile) to a wide base with a short projection (moderate profile). He says: "Each of these implants have the same exact volume, just tremendously differing shapes." Dr. Lintner explains that the different shapes can be helpful for producing a specific look on different body types. He explains, "A high profile implant might be beneficial for patients with narrow chests, as well as for patients seeking a more dramatic look."

Overall, Dr. Lintner says he works very closely with each of his patients so he can customize the breast augmentation procedure to meet her aesthetic goals and personal preferences. He says he does not determine which size implant to use based on measurements alone. Instead, he takes the data collected from his time spent getting to know the patient and selects the appropriate intraoperative sizers. Dr. Lintner explains he can then use the sizers in the operating room to find the size that will best achieve the patient's aesthetic goals. By using this method, Dr. Lintner says he can create a look his patients will be happy with for years to come.
