MEGGEN, SWITZERLAND--(Marketwired - May 15, 2014) - Golden Frog, a global privacy and security company, today announced VyprDNS™, an encrypted, "zero logging" DNS (domain name service). VyprDNS, available exclusively for VyprVPN users, defeats internet censorship, performs no logging of hostnames (including hostnames in URLs), and offers superior DNS geolocation.
DNS, an essential component of the internet, translates Web addresses into IP addresses so computers can communicate with desired hosts. Internet users typically rely on their ISP's DNS servers or a 3rd party DNS, which are often configured to comprehensively log internet activity and censor websites -- even when the user is using a VPN service.
Using VyprDNS greatly enhances internet privacy by keeping DNS services from logging IP addresses, websites visited and geolocation data. Additionally, with VyprDNS, requests pass through an encrypted tunnel. This prevents "man-in-the-middle" attacks when a government or 3rd party redirects requests to a different online destination than intended.
"DNS requests can be a perfect record of a user's online activity and are an overlooked part of a solid online privacy strategy," said Philip Molter, CTO of Golden Frog. "Internet users would be astonished if they realized the comprehensive logging performed by home ISPs, mobile ISPs and leading third party free DNS services. By integrating VyprDNS into VyprVPN, a user's DNS requests are encrypted to defeat censorship and won't be logged."
VyprDNS and the privacy policies that govern it are fully controlled by Golden Frog. Golden Frog performs zero DNS logging and never retains data about requests made to VyprDNS servers. The logging of DNS activity creates unnecessary exposure of a user's online activity.
DNS censorship by repressive governments and DNS filtering by private organizations is increasing around the world. For example, when a request for www.facebook.com is made in China, the government can intercept the DNS request and redirect the request to a governmental approved site. VyprDNS encrypts requests so they can't be intercepted. It also enables users to bypass Web filtering at WiFi hotspots (like those found in coffee shops, airports and schools) that configure their DNS servers to deny access to specific types of websites.
Finally, because most VPN providers use a 3rd party DNS, there are often geolocation-based errors because the DNS server is located in a different country than the VPN server. This causes websites to return results optimized for the location of the DNS server and not the VPN server location. VyprDNS prevents these errors by locating the VyprDNS server in the same location as the VyprVPN server.
VyprDNS is included with all VyprVPN plans and is enabled whenever a user connects to VyprVPN. Unlike virtually every other VPN provider in the world, Golden Frog writes custom VPN server software, manages its own network, and owns the hardware enabling the company to deliver fast VPN speeds and better protect user data and privacy. All VyprVPN users get unlimited bandwidth and connection speeds and are able to switch between 700+ VyprVPN servers worldwide without restrictions or download caps at no additional charge.
