Orange County Plastic Surgeon Simplifies the Breast Implant Selection Process

LAGUNA BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 3, 2014) - In the United States, women interested in breast augmentation have a number of different implant options available to them. Though some patients have a good idea of the implant size and shape they are looking for, others may find the selection process to be intimidating at times. In an effort to help facilitate the implant selection process for his prospective breast surgery patients, Orange County plastic surgeon Daniel Mills, MD recently featured two blog posts on his website answering questions patients frequently ask:

2. How Do I Choose the Correct Implant Shape and Size?

"At the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute, Dr. Mills offers three different types of breast implants: saline, silicone, and gummy bear (cohesive gel)," begins the first blog article. Of the three options, the post notes that saline breast implants are generally the least expensive, though they tend to exhibit more rippling than the others. In contrast, smooth-wall saline implants have less of a tendency for rippling and often feel the softest, but their national rate of capsular contracture (10%) is a bit higher. The blog entry reveals, however, that "Dr. Mills' personal capsular contracture rate is only 2% with these implants."

Last to be highlighted in the blog post are gummy bear breast implants. "These implants have shown a decrease in the risk of capsular contracture (only 1.6%), and since they are more cohesive, they typically won't leak as much in the rare event of a rupture." Although they are generally the most expensive option, gummy bear breast implants are believed to potentially be the longest-lasting.

"When selecting the proper size and shape for breast implants," begins the second blog article, "the patient's goals and expectations must be thoroughly assessed and matched to what can ultimately be achieved." To help patients choose their ideal implant size, Dr. Mills utilizes a combination of physical and visual aids:

• Implant Sizers - Patients can try on multiple implant sizers to get an idea of how each implant might look on their frame.
  
  
• VECTRA® 3D Imaging - To go along with implant sizers, VECTRA® 3D imaging can be used to provide patients with three dimensional images of potential results they may achieve with different implant sizes.

In regard to choosing implant shape, the blog post states that viewing results other patients have achieved can often be the best strategy. It goes on to note that a "high profile" implant typically provides a more rounded look on top, a "moderate profile" implant often bears resemblance to a push-up bra look, and a "lower profile" implant more closely resembles a natural breast shape. However, no matter the shape patients choose, the implant needs to be as wide as the breast in order achieve the most natural-looking results.

In the end, the blog article concludes by stating, "No matter your breast enhancement goals, Dr. Mills will work closely with you to determine the implant size and shape that has the most potential to achieve the results you are envisioning."
