PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwired - July 30, 2014) - For some pregnant women taking the vital prenatal folic acid that their doctor prescribes won't work. Statistics show that 15-20 percent of pregnant women have certain genetic mutations that keep them from absorbing the form of folic acid that most doctors recommend. In those individuals, an active form of folic acid is required so that certain biochemical conversions are bypassed.
Kirkman® now offers 5-MTHF ([6S] 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate), the most active and absorbable form of folic acid, that some physicians along with clinical studies have reported to be more effective than folic acid for individuals affected by the genetic mutations.
Kirkman® is also reformulating its preconception and prenatal supplements to substitute 5-MTHF for folic or folinic acid. The changes should offer a form of folic acid that will be more effective with more women. An added benefit is that where 5-MTHF is substituted for folinic acid, dosages can be stronger. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limit the amount of folinic acid that can be used in supplements because folinic acid can be used as a drug in certain situations. The FDA does not, however, restrict the dosage of 5-MTHF.
Kirkman's new 5-MTHF is offered in a 1 mg hypoallergenic capsule in both Kirkman's retail (product number 0477-120) and professional (product number 5477-120) lines. Kirkman® will also be offering a 5 mg 5-MTHF, expected to begin shipping in August.
