HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Aug. 26, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FishTrack continues to expand coverage on the East Coast of the US with the addition of another HD cam along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A new HD cam location just north of Avon Pier will provide high quality, streaming HD video of the pier and beach to the north. The Avon Pier Fishing Cam page also features updated wave, wind and tide tables, along with links to local fishing reports and recent FishTrack feature articles.
The new camera location joins coverage already in service at Rodanthe and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton.
The Avon Fishing Pier was the first pier constructed on Hatteras Island in 1962. The pier extends out 600 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and the total length is almost 700 feet when the pier house is included. Unlike Jennette's Pier to the north, Avon Pier is made completely of wooden planks and pilings. Storms over the past several years -- Isabel, Irene and Sandy -- have taken a toll on the pier leading to a wobbly, curved appearance. But while other piers to the north and south have succumbed to storms, the Avon fishing pier has held its own over the past 50+ years. A walk out along the pier's roller-coaster deck is an experience in itself!
Avon Pier is a favorite fishing destination. A world-record redfish weighing over 94 pounds was caught not far from the pier structure in the 1980s. Depending on the season, anglers target spot, cobia, drum, pompano and bluefish from the Avon Pier and nearby beaches. The pier also hosts annual fishing tournaments, and a full-stocked bait shop offering gear rentals is on site.
Summer fishing is in full swing, so be sure to check the Avon Pier Fishing Cam before you head out on your next trip.
