TAMPA BAY, FL--(Marketwired - Sep 3, 2014) - In addition to providing their patients with the latest vision correction technology and techniques, the eye surgeons at Gulfcoast Eye Care also remain up-to-date with current research in the field to help ensure their patients receive the best possible care available. A recent study published in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that the risk of cataract development may be lowered by the use of a daily multivitamin. In light of this discovery, Tampa Bay cataract surgeon Michael Manning, MD authored a blog post on his practice's website to inform his patients on how to best use this information to aid in cataract prevention.
"While the decrease in risk of cataract development was relatively small, I am happy to see the results of this study," says Dr. Manning in his blog post titled, "Can I Decrease My Risk for Cataracts?" Even before the results of this most recent study were released, the Tampa Bay ophthalmologist had been recommending that his patients take a combination eye vitamin/multivitamin -- a supplement he offers at his office -- to maintain good eye health.
However, Dr. Manning also notes that there are a few rules for vitamin supplements patients should keep in mind in order to maximize eye health benefits. Some of these tips include finding a reputable manufacturer, making sure the vitamins are not expired, and searching for a multivitamin that is high in antioxidants, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin. According to him, "Antioxidants are generally considered to have an anti-aging effect, and these vitamins have shown to be helpful in preventing cataract formation and in decreasing the rate of development of macular degeneration."
Although taking these vitamin supplements is certainly not a foolproof method of cataract prevention, Dr. Manning assures his patients that if they do develop cataracts, the doctors at his practice have both the experience and expertise to help correct their vision with cataract surgery. "From state-of-the-art diagnostic testing to laser cataract surgery to innovative intraocular lens implants, we are fully equipped to help you see clearly again."
