Zeuterin is a safe and virtually painless alternative to surgical neutering to sterilize male dogs, preventing homeless puppies from being born. Zeuterin injections are provided on an out-patient, first come, first served basis. A veterinarian exam is required for all dogs to determine the acceptability of the animal as a candidate for Zeuterin injections. The normal price to sterilize male dogs with Zeuterin is $50. Zeuterin neutering is free during the Dog Day at Sanford event. Microchips will be $10 and rabies vaccinations will be $5 for the special event.
The Zeuterin solution is gently injected into each of the dog's two testes with a very small needle. The procedure takes approximately five minutes and does not require the use of general anesthesia. Patients benefit from mild sedation prior to the injection procedure. Following administration, sterilization is essentially 100% (99.6%) effective, permanent and irreversible. Dogs sterilized with Zeuterin are identified with a permanent "Z" tattoo.
"Having an injection available to sterilize male dogs, as opposed to traditional surgery, is truly revolutionary," says Dr. Rebecca Rhoades, Medical Director of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. "There is no anesthesia with Zeuterin and dogs can go home right after the injections. Increased efficiencies also allow us to sterilize many more male dogs with this procedure."
According to Kerri Burns, Executive Director of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, "preventing homeless dogs and cats from being born is a critical part of our mission. For people who already have pets, particularly male dogs, Zeuterin injections offer an alternative to traditional surgery for neutering and prevent unwanted litters." Burns continued, "For families looking to adopt a new canine family member, the Pet Alliance Sanford location will also be conducting free dog adoptions all day at the Dog Day event."
As summer ends, the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando Sanford animal shelter is filled to capacity with adoptable dogs. Free dog adoptions during the Dog Day at Sanford event will help more dogs find their forever homes. On average, Pet Alliance invests about $300 in every adoptable pet to provide sterilization, micro chipping, vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention, pet health insurance, and a veterinarian examination. The Pet Alliance Sanford shelter is located at 2800 County Home Road, Sanford, Florida 32773, phone number (407) 323-8685. All adoptable pets are available for viewing online at www.petallianceorlando.org.
