TORONTO, Sept. 18, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today Metatecture announced the launch of AirVR, the first wireless VR headset for iPad Mini, iPad Mini with Retina and iPhone 6+.
AirVR, a revolutionary new virtual reality device from Metatecture, enables users to transform Apple products into portable and immersive VR units. By simply sliding the iPad/iPhone into the AirVR headset, users are instantly transported into an explosive VR world.
AirVR comes readily equipped with three VR applications so users can:
- PhotoVR App: Experience photos from their personal collection and around the world in a whole new dimension.
- MovieVR App: Immerse themselves in 3D/HD movies, either first-person or via a video on a virtual 3D screen.
- PanoVR App: Plunge into luscious 360° panoramas to relive places they've been and experience places they'll go. Full spherical panoramas will map perfectly to the virtual space, creating a realistic VR snapshot of a certain place at a certain time.
Users will have no shortage of VR content. With over 9,000,000 iOS developers active today, AirVR released an open source SDK that is built upon Unity3D, the most widely adopted game development software in the world. This will allow developers to efficiently build new VR applications and update existing applications with VR experience. Application developers will also have the ability to participate in a revenue sharing program based on hardware sales.
AirVR enters the VR market from two unique perspectives: efficiency and price. With over 100,000,000 iPads shipped and over 4,000,000 iPhones 6+ sold on pre-order, AirVR hits the ground running at just $49 per unit; a relatively small price to pay for consumers to naturally extend the capability of their iPad or iPhone into the realm of VR.
"By combining AirVR with existing Apple hardware, AirVR competes with major industry players in the VR space," said Edgar Wong, CTO, Metatecture.
AirVR holds many exciting possibilities for the immediate future, allowing users to visit and experience remote locales, take virtual vacations, and attend events from around the world. Further product expansion is on the docket for 2015 with an eye on Android and MS Surface devices.
"Virtual Reality is finally within reach for the everyday consumer. However, expensive costs, availability, and lack of applicable content have created barriers with the consumer market," said Steve Reaume, Founder, Metatecture. "With AirVR, we've removed these obstacles and have truly created a VR platform for the masses."
