VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Oct. 9, 2014) - Premier Christy Clark and British Columbia Achievement Foundation Chair Keith Mitchell are pleased to announce the recipients of the Annual Carter Wosk BC Creative Achievement Awards for Art and Design and the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction.
"Each of these recipients stand out for their creativity and entrepreneurship," said Premier Clark. "Like them, British Columbia's creative industries stand out as among the best in the world."
Furniture designer Judson Beaumont was named the recipient of the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction. This award celebrates Judson's innovation and creativity over his career of nearly 30 years. Mr. Beaumont was selected by the board of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation.
The recipients of the juried awards, the 2014 Carter Wosk Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design, are:
- Jim Barnum, Skateboard Park Design
- Tania Gleave, Jewellery
- Marie Khouri - Furniture Design
The awards will be presented later this fall at a formal ceremony at Shaw Studios in Vancouver.
"The Creative Achievement Awards continue to honour B.C. artists whose work is judged to be innovative and original while having a practical function," Mitchell said. "This years recipients represent a broad spectrum of applied design that contributes to the economic and cultural diversity of our province."
The 2014 jury included Sam Carter, professor emeritus at Emily Carr University of Art and Design; Joanna Staniskis, internationally recognized textile designer and 2007 BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction winner, Professor Jack Lohman, CEO, Royal BC Museum, Victoria, BC and Rob Johnston, development and product designer and 2009 recipient of a BC Creative Achievement Award.
The Carter Wosk British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design are named in honour of B.C. philanthropist, academic and visionary Dr. Yosef Wosk, whose financial support makes these awards possible and for Sam Carter, B.C. educator, designer and curator.

2014 BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction
British Columbia furniture designer Judson Beaumont has been creating whimsical, imaginative and masterful furniture pieces for 29 years. Inspired by kids and their liberal acceptance of the bizarre, Judson's work is bold, colourful, expressive and functional. Judson graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1985 and then founded Straight Line Designs Inc. His company has completed unique design projects and installations throughout North America and around the world including pieces for children's hospitals, museums, libraries, Disney Cruise ships and various exhibitions.

A lifelong skateboarder, Jim Barnum has developed an internationally renowned skatepark design practice with over 150 projects in Canada, France, UK, Israel, USA, China and Taiwan. Jim has received awards from the International Olympic Committee, the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and the SkatePark Association of the USA.

Trained at Emily Carr University and Capilano College in textile art and design and metal sculpture, Tania is a jewellery designer whose work is strong, bold, elegant and confident. Tania travels the world in her constant search for inspiration and raw materials such as leather, ebony, bone, metal, agate and gemstones. Her jewellery is defined by using traditional techniques in new applications resulting in a strong and clear aesthetic. Tania's work has been shown across the United States and Canada.

A 10 year resident of British Columbia, Khouri's furniture design is both sculptural and functional; a blend of art and design. It represents the cultural and historical influences of the countries in which she has lived: Egypt, Lebanon, Paris, Spain and Italy. Artistically she has been influenced by Henry Moore and the Bauhaus School. Khouri has exhibited in New York, Paris, London and Tokyo has completed public art commissions in the United States and Asia. In 2012, Western Living Magazine named Khouri its Industrial Designer of the Year.
