PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 17, 2014) - On November 14, 2014, at its annual conference of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), Cooley pro bono partner, Maureen Alger, was awarded the 2014 Arthur von Briesen Award for her work on behalf of equal justice. The von Briesen Award honors outstanding service in advancing the cause of equal access to justice, and recognizes the contributions of individuals and programs from a cross-section of the legal aid, public defense, and corporate law communities.
Commitment to the community is an important part of Cooley's culture and a fundamental component the firm's vision and values. Pro bono legal service is at the core of that commitment. Under Alger's leadership, in 2013, 469 Cooley attorneys contributed more than 30,000 hours on more than 700 pro bono matters.
In addition to her accomplishments within Cooley, Alger is also a leader in the promotion and coordination of pro bono work regionally and nationally. She is a founder of the Bay Area Pro Bono Roundtable, the Bar Association of San Francisco's Pro Bono Committee, and the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo). She is also an active member of the State Bar of California's Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services (SCDLS). In 2011, Alger was recognized for her outstanding achievements by the YWCA Tribute to Women Awards Program.
