Track facility with Mondo surface honored by ASBA for excellence in sports facility construction

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Dec. 17, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Once again, a facility with a track made by Mondo, the global leader in the track and field, indoor sport and contract flooring markets, has been honored for excellence in sports construction by the American Sports Builders Association. This year's honoree is Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State, which won in the Distinguished Track Facilities category.

In addition, within each category, one facility is chosen from among all winning entries to represent the best of athletic facility construction. Hornet Stadium also won Outdoor Track Facility of the Year.

Hornet Stadium has Mondo's newest surface, the Super X 720. The university was among the first in the world with the innovative surface. The eight-lane, 400-meter competition track that went into the 21,195-seat Hornet Stadium replaced a Mondo Super X Performance track that was installed in 1998. A two-lane, 400-meter warm up track and all runways also have the Super X 720 surface.

Last year officials at USA Track & Field told Sacramento State that the school needed a new track to be considered for championship competitions. When university officials evaluated possible replacement tracks, Mondo emerged on top for several reasons, including the durability and performance benefits of the previous Mondo track. After installing the new Super X 720 track, Sacramento State won the right to host the 2014 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor West Regional Championships.

The Super X 720 surfaces were installed by Staples Construction Co., Inc., Ventura, Calif., while Robert Cohen Co. of Albuquerque, N.M., served as subcontractor.

Mondo's Super X 720 track combines the wear layer of the company's renowned Super X Performance track, the world's top track for more than 30 years, and the backing of Mondotrack, the competition track of the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games. The layers are vulcanized together to form one continuous, seamless piece of material that delivers exceptional traction, durability, drainage and safety. The backing provides exceptional shock absorption and energy return, which further helps the performance layer increase athletes' comfort and enables them to achieve faster times than when running on other surfaces.

ASBA, of which Mondo is a member, is the national organization for builders, designers and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities. Annual awards are presented to facilities built by ASBA members that best exemplify construction excellence. A panel of ASBA members anonymously judged entries. Projects were scored individually based on considerations such as layout and design, site work, drainage, base construction, surface, amenities, innovation and overall impression. Winning entries' cumulative scores met or exceeded the standard.
