LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CES 2015 -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, announced today the smallest, lowest power MoCA® 2.0 (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) USB power and data adapter reference design.
Entropic continues to push the boundaries on delivering the lowest power, high performance compact MoCA 2.0 solutions that enable a 'no excuses' whole-home network for high definition (HD) and Ultra HD/4K video and streaming media services - all over the existing in-home coax network. The Company's latest MoCA 2.0 adapter reference design is the first-ever solution to combine the most advanced MoCA 2.0 technology available on the market with feature-rich functionality in a thumb drive form factor. In addition to its extremely small size (less than 3 square inches), the new reference design is the only solution to support both power and data over the same USB port.
"We know how to design discrete MoCA home networking solutions better than any company," said Al Servati, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. "We invented the technology and have a deep history in providing innovative MoCA reference designs that have propelled the home networking industry forward. Our introduction of the MoCA 2.0 USB reference design accelerates home networking innovation, as it is the world's smallest, lowest power solution, ideal for online gaming using the latest gaming consoles and OTT devices such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire, allowing uninterrupted streaming of multimedia content from sources like Netflix, Apple, Hulu, HBO GO®, SHOWTIME ANYTIME®, or Amazon Prime and delivering available 4K content from over-the-top services like Netflix to an Ultra High Definition TV."
Entropic's latest generation of MoCA 2.0 solutions were designed for low power applications, ensured to meet USB power consumption limits while supporting unconstrained MoCA data throughput over the same USB port. The design exceeds the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for connected consumer electronics (CE) devices and ensures the most stable method for delivering high bandwidth HD or 4K/Ultra HD video coming to the TV. Having a small, low power MoCA 2.0 reference design enables OEMs to design cost competitive products that can easily be used in applications with stringent power budgets. Added benefits of a low-power solution include improved reliability and lower overall system costs, without sacrifices in performance.
Servati continued, "We're making it easy for consumers to enjoy a rich multimedia experience anywhere in their homes. Entropic's latest USB adapter is small enough to sit behind a USB-ready television, game console or OTT box, and delivers unprecedented throughput with MoCA connectivity without requiring an additional power adapter. It is the perfect solution to leverage the in-home coax backbone for buffer-free entertainment consumers want."
The MoCA 2.0 standard delivers net throughput rates of 400+ Mbps over 16 devices/nodes and 500+ Mbps when in turbo mode.
The MoCA 2.0 USB bus-powered reference design uses Entropic's EN2800 family of discrete MoCA chip, the Company's second-generation, single-chip MoCA 2.0 system solution. Additionally, OEMs can leverage the EN28xx-series pin compatibility with existing EN256x and EN258x MoCA 1.1 solutions to design a single-board for both MoCA 1.1 and MoCA 2.0 products, which ultimately lowers development costs and enables a common bill of the material (BOM) to be used over multiple products and segments.
Availability
The new MoCA 2.0 USB bus-powered adapter reference design is available today and will be demonstrated at CES 2015 in Entropic's Meeting Suite at The Wynn Las Vegas, Alsace Ballroom, from January 6 – January 9, 2015.
