Good Samaritan Hospital Honors Heart Patients, Local First Responders and Impella Devices at Celebration of Life Event February 27

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In honor of American Heart Month and an outstanding team of doctors, staff, local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Impella line of life-saving heart devices from Abiomed, Good Samaritan Hospital is hosting the "Celebration of Life" event at its main auditorium on February 27. As a cardiac center of choice in Santa Clara County, Good Samaritan Hospital has seen its share of incredible patient stories.

In fact, Good Samaritan Hospital is the first hospital in San Jose to become an Accredited Chest Pain Center. Its cardiology team is available 24/7 for all cardiac emergencies. The hospital offers specialty heart care for all, from infants to seniors, with a full range of diagnostic and treatment options, as well as a two-phase Cardiac Rehab program including nutrition information, stress management techniques and progressive exercise with monitoring by Registered Nurses.

Good Samaritan Hospital cardiac patients, who have each benefited from the technology of the Impella device and the advanced care provided by the hospital's Cardiac and Vascular Institute, will be sharing their stories alongside their physicians, first responders, cardiac intensive care and step-down nurses, physical and occupational therapists, members of Mended Hearts, the nation's oldest peer-to-peer cardiac support group in the country, and cardiac rehab nurses. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital's Auditorium, located at 2425 Samaritan Drive in San Jose. Lunch will also be served.

"While some community hospitals would have to transfer cardiac patients to a more comprehensive facility, we have experts who have achieved many 'firsts' when it comes to new surgeries and interventions," said Dr. Felix Lee, Chairman of Cardiology and Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at Good Samaritan Hospital. "We were the first in the area to use drug-eluting stents and PFO closure devices, and started using the Impella device in 2012. Our team of 16 interventional cardiologists are always on the cutting edge of the latest advances in both devices and approaches."

The Impella line of heart pump devices is designed to enable the heart to rest by improving blood flow or performing the pumping of the heart.

Members of the Silicon Valley community are encouraged to attend "Celebration of Life" and show their support for people who have been touched by cardiac emergencies.
