Metis Nation of Ontario Health Summit February 22-24 in Toronto

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - February 19, 2015) - Approximately 200 health and wellness professionals, researchers, and government representatives are gathering in Toronto on February 22-24 for the inaugural Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Health Summit.

The Honourable Tracy MacCharles, Minister of Children and Youth Services, will be among the guest speakers at this landmark event that will also include some of the leading experts in Aboriginal health and chronic diseases. All meetings take place in the Ballroom at the Intercontinental Toronto Centre Hotel on 225 Front Street West. The Summit will start the evening of Sunday, February 22 with a reception and welcome from MNO President Gary Lipinski. A complete agenda is attached to this media advisory.

The Summit will launch the latest results from the MNO's ground breaking program of collaborative research on Métis health, conducted with partners from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Ontario universities, federal and provincial governments, and organizations with an interest in Métis health.

Sessions will provide the latest information on coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disease, renal disease, mental health, and health risk factors in the provincial Métis population, which show significant health disparities in this 'at risk' population. The Summit will also highlight community practices being developed by the MNO and its partners that aim to bring about measurable improvements in Métis health outcomes.
