Department of Energy "Better Building Challenge" Proposed for New Jersey Senior Care Facilities

During Interview With Michele Kent of LeadingAge NJ


PRINCETON, N.J., March 5, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- During a recent "Leading Thoughts with LeadingAge NJ" video interview with LeadingAge NJ President and CEO Michele Kent, the Director of the Newark Multifamily Program Center Dean Santa discussed significant developments at New Jersey's Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Mr. Santa presented several developments including a "Better Building Challenge" initiative that challenges senior housing, multi-family properties and other companies to set examples by cutting energy emissions by 20% over the next ten years, thereby protecting the environment, saving billions of dollars and creating new jobs.

"The Better Building Challenge is a leadership initiative that asks companies of all kinds to make a public commitment to reducing energy," explained Dean Santa. "The Department of Energy is highlighting leaders that have committed to upgrading buildings and plants across their portfolio and providing their energy saving data and the strategies they use to save energy to others, so others can follow this business model. The goal is to make buildings and industrial plants 20% more energy efficient over 10 years."

Michele Kent noted, "It's the right thing to do. Once these energy savings models are established, others such as our senior care facilities can replicate them."
