Organizing the move: the planning, packing, loading, and unloading, is an exhausting undertaking. And nowadays, protecting one's identity during a move is another thing to worry about. "Movers need to be trusted to transport all of your belonging to your new home, but also trusted not to jot down your personal information and steal your good credit." Especially if the moving company is helping pack up belongings, be extra cautious before picking a moving company.
Movers need to stay vigilant to avoid a costly identity breach. T-N-T reminds its clients about the importance of protecting their mail. "We've all received mail that wasn't addressed to us. Unfortunately, most residents just toss these into the trash, leaving your information vulnerable to dumpster divers looking to steal your identity."
T-N-T recommends that their clients make a change of address checklist. Be sure to include all companies, institutions, and subscriptions on the checklist including schools, former employers, banks, credit card companies, and magazines. Or fill out a change-of-address form at the post office. This can be done online as well, but T-N-T warns against fraudulent websites that offer these services. The official US postal service website is www.usps.gov. Fill out the form at least 10 days before the scheduled move.
Another tip that T-N-T recommends is to transport sensitive documents containing personal, financial or medical information in your own vehicle instead of on the moving truck. These documents could be wills, birth certificates, financial records, insurance statements or medical records.
Finally, T-N-T suggests that their clients follow up on their accounts after the move. "Even if you are careful before and during your move, be sure to check up after the move," says Tom Tulowiecki. Keep track of activity on accounts and check your credit report after the move.
