Chemical-resistant 'Super Lice' on the Rise in Massachusetts

New treatment center aims to stop the trend and eliminate the stigma of head lice.

DANVERS, Mass., June 2, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Growing concern for chemical head lice resistance is forcing parents, schools, and public health officials in Massachusetts to rethink humanity's oldest pest problem. The solution? A lot of hot air.

"The important thing for people to know is that store-bought treatments don't work because lice are becoming resistant," says Kristen Hollingsworth, owner of Lice Clinics of America-Danvers, a new treatment facility in Massachusetts that uses safe, all-natural heated air to kill lice and dry out their eggs. "I got into this business because I caught lice back in August and tried treating it unsuccessfully for two weeks before I learned about the AirAllé device."

Lice Clinics of America-Danvers, which celebrated its grand opening on Jan. 8, is a dedicated treatment center with the sole purpose of ridding families of head lice using the FDA-cleared AirAllé medical device. The device, which is exclusive to Lice Clinics of America, the world's largest network of lice-removal professionals, gently dehydrates and kills head lice and their eggs in one treatment, effectively eliminating the need for chemical shampoos, medications, and messy home remedies.

A licensed cosmetologist for eight years, Hollingsworth says her method also helps relieve the stress and anxiety associated with so-called 'super lice'. "I wish people would understand that head lice do not discriminate," she says, "They actually prefer clean hair! But the good news is my method treats super lice in one day and it's guaranteed for 30 days."

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 6 to 12 million infestations occur each year in the U.S. among children 3 to 11 years of age. Some studies suggest that girls get head lice more often than boys, probably due to more frequent head-to-head contact.
