PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwired - Jun 4, 2015) - The Oregon State Bar (OSB) honored Larry J. Brant, a shareholder with Garvey Schubert Barer, as the recipient of the Taxation Section's Award of Merit. Brant was presented with the Award today at the Oregon Tax Institute, one of the preeminent tax conferences in the Pacific Northwest.
"I am truly honored and humbled by this recognition from the Oregon State Bar," said Brant. "The OSB Tax Section is comprised of a wonderful group of talented tax practitioners, making receiving this award very meaningful."
The Award of Merit recognizes and honors those who exemplify professionalism in the practice of tax law in the State of Oregon. It is granted to the candidate whom the Section believes best personifies the Oregon State Bar's Statement of Professionalism, and best serves as a role model for other lawyers. Factors considered include reputation, conduct, leadership activities and services within the bar or community in general, and pro bono service.
"Larry has made significant and lasting contributions to the Bar, the Taxation Section and the overall legal profession in Oregon, and it is a privilege to present him with the award," said John A. Magliana, Jr., a 30-year tax attorney and active member of the Tax Section, who nominated Brant for the award.
Brant is a past Chair of the Oregon State Bar Taxation Section and was the long term Chair of the Oregon Tax Institute. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Portland Tax Forum. In addition, Brant has been named by peers to The Best Lawyers in America© in the area of Tax Law; a "Super Lawyer" in Oregon Super Lawyers magazine; and "Best of the Bar" in taxation by the Portland Business Journal.
Brant is a national thought leader and writer on federal, state and local taxation. He serves as an Editor of Thomson Reuters Checkpoint Catalyst. He publishes articles on numerous income tax issues, including Taxation of S Corporations, Reasonable Compensation, Circular 230, Worker Classification, IRC § 1031 Exchanges and Choice of Entity. He also produces one of the leading national tax law blogs, LarrysTaxLaw.com. Brant is a frequent lecturer at local, regional and national tax and business conferences for CPAs and attorneys, including the NYU Tax Institute, the Oregon Tax Institute, the Northwest Tax Institute and many others.
"Larry is the epitome of professionalism within the firm, with our clients and within the legal profession, so it is great to see the Oregon State Bar recognize him with this award," said Anne Preston, chair of Garvey Schubert Barer.
