OSSTF/FEESO Celebrates World Environment Day

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - June 05, 2015) - Today the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) celebrates World Environment Day, a day established by the United Nations to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

"OSSTF/FEESO is committed to promoting and facilitating positive action on environmental concerns wherever possible," said OSSTF/FEESO President Paul Elliott. "In April we provided a detailed submission on climate change solutions to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, and we have mandated our Environment Advisory Workgroup and our Communications and Political Action Committee to work together on a comprehensive strategy to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions."

OSSTF/FEESO's submission to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change focused on opportunities for environmental stewardship within the province's public school facilities, and discussed solutions to specific environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, food production and transportation.

In addition to the work carried out internally by committees and workgroups, OSSTF/FEESO also provides thousands of dollars of funding to its local Districts across the province for environmental initiatives and activities.

"We urge all OSSTF/FEESO members to observe World Environment Day by enhancing their own awareness of environmental issues, and committing themselves to work toward solutions in whatever way they can," concluded Elliott.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
