Prophecy Healthcare(R) Launches Charge Nurse Validated Competency Exams

Held in Wyoming, subject matter experts with combined 45 years' experience joined Prophecy leaders to create validated content for the new Charge RN exams.

GREENSBORO, N.C., July 31, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Prophecy Healthcare®, Inc. – leader in healthcare competency testing – and partnering facility Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County announce the launch of new nationally validated Charge Nurse assessments. Charge nurses play a key role in the successful functioning of the healthcare team.  Using exams during the hiring process, with validated content linked to job role responsibilities of healthcare positions, directly correlates to improving quality of patient care.

"Working alongside Prophecy's validation team was such a rewarding experience for the nurses involved in the workshop.  By participating in the workshop, they saw their contributions leading towards improved patient safety in the role of future Charge Nurses. We thank Deb Gaspar, our Chief Nursing Officer, for providing the support for the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County and Prophecy Healthcare collaboration," commented Kristy Nielson, MSN, CCRN, CNE, Director of Education, University of Wyoming Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing Adjunct Faculty.

The validation workshop was held in Rock Springs, Wyoming with partnering facility, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County.  A panel of RN subject matter experts (SMEs), with over 45 years of combined experience functioning as charge nurses and nursing supervisors, completed the two-phase development process.

During the content validation study for the Charge RN Assessment, a comprehensive list of job duties performed by Charge Nurses were identified, in addition to an aggregation of over 35 individual knowledge, skills, and abilities required in order to perform this role competently, safely, and proficiently.  Specific competencies related to the Charge Nurse role assessed by these exams include:

  • Communication
  • Conflict Resolution
  • General Knowledge
  • Leadership and Management
  • Professional Issues
  • Quality and Safety
  • Staffing/Assignments

"Identifying those nurses with the leadership and management skills necessary to be a successful charge nurse can be challenging," commented supervisor overseeing the implementation of the research and revision process, Leslie Jeffries BSN RN Sr. Vice President of Clinical Operations. "In order to identify and support those who are potential Charge Nurses we had to identify those key roles completed by this integral team player. Through diligent collaboration with Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County's SMEs, we were able to do just that."

Charge nurses play a key role in the successful functioning of the healthcare team.  A great charge nurse leads the healthcare team to manage the care of the patients efficiently and effectively.

Prophecy encourages other facilities to show their commitment to patient safety by becoming Prophecy Certified Validation Partners - providing high caliber pre-screening assessment tools for the healthcare industry one specialty at a time.
