PITTSBURGH, Aug. 4, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, consulting, planning, technical and professional services, has renewed its long-standing partnership with the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) to perform comprehensive construction management and inspection services at both Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall) and Martin State Airport (MTN). The six-year, $9-million agreement awards Michael Baker the ongoing work of overseeing critical infrastructure projects that include airfield improvements and terminal enhancements. Since 2011, MAA has relied upon Michael Baker to manage construction projects and inspection programs at its airports during a time when the authority's passenger base and the demand for upgraded facilities have both been on the rise.
"MAA's renewal of our contract is a rewarding validation of the quality of the work we are performing for BWI and its customers," said Kurt Bergman, CEO of Michael Baker International. "We are proud to be part of MAA's efforts to restore and upgrade its properties, particularly when you consider that BWI is now the busiest airport in the Washington, D.C. region and is expected to continue its growth."
Michael Baker will continue to serve as MAA's on-site agent through all phases of construction at BWI Marshall and MTN. The company will oversee construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts, who will manage all projects from pre-design through completion. Michael Baker will also set and maintain quality standards through rigorous inspection programs.
The renewed partnership comes at a time when MAA is maintaining an aggressive construction schedule. BWI Marshall is in the midst of a $105-million, multi-year expansion project to enhance terminal amenities and support a growing international passenger base. Scheduled for completion in 2017, the improvements include construction of a new security checkpoint, a connector between two concourses, two new gates and an outdoor patio area for travelers.
"Maintaining and improving this country's infrastructure is a national imperative, because it helps support economic growth," Bergman added. "MAA is taking on this challenge, and with our full continuum of innovative solutions, our global expertise and experience and our local focus, Michael Baker International is the perfect partner to ensure the work is done well and on time."
In 2014, more than 22 million passengers flew through BWI Marshall. In the past six years, international traffic at the facility has nearly doubled.
