McComas’ talk, “Establishing a Soil Library and Determination of Worst-Case Soil for Cycle Development of Cleaning Equipment,” will address developing a soil library and how this process can save time and money while ensuring proper cleaning.
“I have worked for so many clients that really struggle with this element,” says Janet McComas. “A soil library is a compendium of the components, compounds, by-products and waste of the processes performed in a facility. Having systems for identifying the soil is important to proper cleaning but it will also save a lot of time and money.”
This session will address establishing a soil library and considerations to be given to the soils and your process. Topics in the discussion include chemical properties, adhesion factors, maximum allowable carry over (MACO), dirty hold time and developing a ranking system-based upon data. McComas will also address soil phase changes with a demonstration of dried soil, freshly applied soil and soils that are dipped in water. The demonstration illustrates how better understanding of soil can help you narrow the search for the worst-case soil in a facility.
“A soil library is a very useful tool,” says McComas. “When it comes to cleaning you have a rank between 0 and 100, with the lowest being the easiest to clean. Implementing this systematic approach provides a way to sort the soils in your process and quickly identify the cleanability. It will change how one thinks about soils.”
