CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 27, 2015) - Bitglass, the Total Data Protection company, today announced its second annual Cloud Adoption Report. The global report shows a dramatic coup by Microsoft Office 365 (O365), overtaking Google for the lead in cloud email and productivity since last year's report. Microsoft O365 adoption grew more than 300 percent (25.2 percent in the enterprise, up from just 7.7 percent last year). Even with the scale tipping toward Microsoft, Google has still grown its enterprise user base to 22.8 percent, up from 16.3 percent last year. Overall, nearly half (48 percent) of enterprises are using cloud-based productivity and email suites. What's more, the Bitglass report finds that nearly 60 percent of organizations with more than 1,000 employees embrace cloud technologies.
This year's report draws on the largest data set available on this topic, leveraging automated, cloud-based analysis of real-world traffic data from nearly 120,000 organizations globally. The focus of the report includes major enterprise cloud applications, including Microsoft O365, Google Apps, SalesForce and Box.
"Cloud adoption is at an all-time high and Microsoft is overtaking Google. The surprise is that large corporations -- even in heavily regulated industries -- are gaining confidence in cloud apps," says Nat Kausik, CEO of Bitglass. "While enterprises readily migrate email to the cloud, they are reluctant to move years of accumulated intellectual property to cloud-based file sharing services, such as SharePoint and Google Drive, due to security challenges. Cloud Access Security Brokers are filling critical security gaps, paving the way for broader adoption of cloud apps in the enterprise."
Key findings:
- Microsoft vs. Google: O365 is the New King of the Hill
Microsoft O365 tripled its market share from 7.7 percent in 2014 to 25.2 percent this year. Comparatively, Google Apps jumped from 16.3 percent to 22.8 percent.
- Large Organizations Rapidly Moving to the Cloud
Overall adoption of cloud-based email in organizations with more than 1,000 employees rose drastically from 18 percent to 57 percent. Meanwhile, organizations with fewer than 500 employees nearly doubled cloud usage from 24 percent to 44 percent during the past year.
- EMEA and APAC Outpace North America Cloud Adoption; Finland Leads with Nearly 80 Percent Adoption
International data shows EMEA (at 59 percent) and APAC (at 61 percent) have outpaced North America (at 48 percent) in the cloud adoption curve. Finland embraced the cloud more than any other country with 78 percent of enterprises using Google or Microsoft. Both APAC and EMEA showed higher adoption of critical security solutions such as single sign-on (SSO).
- Regulated Industries Swiftly Moving to the Cloud
In regulated industries, organizations with more than 1,000 employees showed great interest in Google Apps and Microsoft O365. Since 2014, Google Apps increased 200 percent (from five percent to 15 percent) and O365 underwent a dramatic 500 percent increase (from five percent to 30 percent).
