MEDIA ADVISORY: Prominent American Columnist Cathy Young to Address Campus Rape Culture in Toronto and Ottawa

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - September 16, 2015) - From the mass suspension of the University of Ottawa hockey team following allegations of sexual assault to Rolling Stone magazine reporting what turned out to be a rape hoax at the University of Virginia, the debate about sexual harassment and rape culture on North American campuses has turned into a powder keg.

In response, prominent American journalist and “equity feminist” Cathy Young will call for reasoned debate and evidence-based policy making when she addresses "The Politics of Gender and Victimhood" at the University of Toronto September 24th at 7:00PM and at Saint Paul University in Ottawa on September 25th at 7:00PM at events sponsored by the Canadian Association for Equality (CAFE).

"The perception of a war on women is oftentimes seen as justification for new public policies that fail to balance support for victims with fundamental rights for the accused," said CAFE Executive Director Justin Trottier. "The result is a modern day witch hunt enabled by an overzealous campus administration and a lax media that in cases of ideology-fuelled campus anti-rape activism can easily hurt innocent people."

Young will argue that we must treat all people fairly and equally, providing immediate support for female and male victims of sexual assault or violence, while simultaneously recommitting to our legal traditions of due process and the presumption of innocence that took thousands of years to establish.
