SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 12, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Apigee® (NASDAQ:APIC), developer of an intelligent API platform for digital business, today launched Apigee Identity APIx – an API-based solution that empowers mobile network operators who are using the GSMA Mobile Connect solution to deliver and manage secure, universal authentication across a range of services and devices. Apigee Identity APIx adds to Apigee’s services for the telecommunications industry, which include the API Exchange – a technology platform delivered to service providers in order to offer identity federation for cross-operator reach.
GSMA Mobile Connect provides mobile network operators a convenient and secure universal authentication solution. With Mobile Connect, subscribers can securely log in to applications and websites using their mobile phones instead of re-keying personal information. The Apigee Identity APIx solution is offered as part of the GSMA Mobile Connect Accelerator (MCX) program. As an MCX partner, Apigee offers operators the Apigee Identity APIX as a cloud service in order to enable them to rapidly deploy Mobile Connect to increase scale more quickly and enable global interoperability.
“We all want to access information and services on mobile devices, but the confusion of having multiple accounts based on passwords that can be hacked can be a major hindrance and a security concern,” said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. “The GSMA Mobile Connect solution allows consumers to log in to apps quickly by simply matching the user to their mobile phone. The Apigee Identity APIx solution empowers mobile network operators to quickly deploy and scale Mobile Connect – with seamless integration with the GSMA API Exchange to extend the reach of apps to a broader, cross-operator market.”
The API Exchange powered by Apigee is the GSMA’s recommended federation mechanism for
Mobile Connect, enabling global discoverability so that subscribers of a mobile network operator offering Mobile Connect can log in to applications from other operators. Apigee launched the API Exchange in 2013 as the first API federation platform designed to power app ecosystems in any industry. Today more than 20 local mobile operators from across the globe are participating in the API Exchange powered by Apigee.
Alex Sinclair, acting director general and chief technology officer, GSMA, commented, “APIs are essential in the new digital economy, and they’re incredibly important for accelerating innovation in the telecommunications industry. Mobile Connect leverages APIs to deliver a significant new capability – universal and secure log-in. Apigee is well suited to what we're doing because they bring a wealth of API management experience with telcos and in other vertical industries.”
The new Apigee Identity APIx solution leverages Apigee Edge, Apigee’s flagship product and a leading API management platform. Apigee Identity APIx enables operators to quickly implement federated identity APIs and expose them to developers as Mobile Connect APIs. Key capabilities of Apigee Identity APIx include:
- Identification and application of preferred level of assurance
- Profile federation from multiple back-ends
- Subscriber consent management with self service
- Out-of-the-box API Exchange integration
In addition, Apigee Identity APIx gives operators the benefits of Apigee API management, including API security, API analytics, API monetization, and developer on-boarding capabilities.
Telstra, the largest telecommunications company in Australia, is an Apigee API management customer and has embraced GSMA’s Mobile Connect universal log-in standard.
“The GSMA Mobile Connect standard is a powerful example of how telcos can leverage their unique position in the communications industry to provide new, simple and modern solutions for today’s connected world. The alignment of Apigee Edge and the API Exchange with GSMA’s Mobile Connect gives us the confidence that deploying our Mobile Connect implementation will be quick, easy and provide cross-operator extensibility,” said Charlotte Yarkoni, president, Telstra Software Group.
Apigee Identity APIx builds on Apigee’s momentum in the telecommunications industry. Today five of the top ten telecommunications companies of the world use Apigee’s API management software. Apigee telco customers include leading operators such as Orange, Swisscom, Telefonica, Telenor, Telstra, Vodafone, and many others. Additionally, Apigee has worked in partnership with the GSMA – an organization that represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide and produces industry-leading events such as Mobile World Congress – since 2012.
Apigee’s flagship Apigee Edge API management platform enables organizations to securely deliver and manage APIs, with agility and at scale. The Apigee Edge platform is part of the Apigee intelligent API platform, which also includes Apigee Insights, an API-based, self-service predictive analytics solution, and Apigee Link, an API-first Internet of Things (IoT) product for connecting devices to the Internet. Most recently, Apigee introduced Apigee Sense, an intelligent API security product.
