NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - December 09, 2015) - Model School Shema Kolainu - Hear Our Voices (SKHOV) announces yet again another great success for its unique workshop series hosted at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. The last to date discussed how to teach adaptive daily living skills to children with autism. Educational Director Gili Rechany of the school and center for children with disabilities once again captivated the audience by offering the ideal blend of subject matter expertise, oratory skills, authenticity and rich content.
The workshop organizers intend those events and their resources to help those involved in the treatment of autism to better understand each of its dimensions and to be better equipped to accompany the population on the spectrum. Adaptive skills are progressively acquired through a process that incorporates task analytics assessment. Academic leader Rechany elaborated on how to tailor task analysis to the student and how to combine this process with other teaching methods and intervention change to achieve mastery. She presented backward and forward chaining as very effective teaching techniques. Rechany highlighted the benefits of teaching life skills. Not only it promotes inclusion in real environments and exposed students to a variety of experiences with opportunities to develop social and interpersonal communications, but it also prepares students for adulthood.
The workshop drew attendance from many distinguished professionals -- advocates, therapists, special education teachers who seek to increase their knowledge and obtain continuing education credits. Parents were also in attendance. Rechany strongly encourages families to play an active part in their child's social and communication development. "Teaching life skills starts in the home with the parents. Therefore communication with the parents is vital in the teaching of life skills," she says. A mother of a SKHOV's student stepped in and raised her voice to reinforce how much the inclusion of the parents in all aspects of instruction has helped to generalize the skills learned in the classroom into other areas of the child's life. Her testimony on the positive impact of SKHOV's teachings to her child's life moved the whole audience.
