Hootsuite Founder Launches Company to Bring Stand Up Desks to the Masses

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - January 13, 2016) - Ryan Holmes, founder and CEO of Hootsuite, the most widely used platform for managing social media, today announced the launch of his new company, Oristand, which intends to democratize the stand up desk. Oristand offers completely functional stand up desks made of industrial-weight, recyclable cardboard at $25 USD -- a fraction of the standard cost.

"Many companies want to provide stand up desks as an option to enhance the work environment and promote the overall health and well-being of employees, however cost is a big barrier," said Holmes. "The investment is simply not feasible for many small-to-medium sized businesses. We wanted to create a product that would solve this problem for both companies and employees." 

For Holmes, Oristand represents the culmination of a personal quest. Back problems from multiple sports injuries left him unable to sit for long periods. Searching for a solution for his office, he discovered conventional stand up desks were both expensive -- generally starting at $200 for base models -- and inflexible. Unable to find an affordable desk that could be easily set up and taken down, he enlisted the help of Vancouver designers Steven Suchy and Nathan Martell to help make his vision a reality.

The result was an ergonomically correct stand up desk that sits atop a traditional desk and can be put to use in under 10 seconds. It weighs less than two pounds and is strong enough to support any laptop-keyboard combination. Oristand collapses to less than one-inch wide when not in use and is easily stored, making it a portable, affordable alternative to a standard stand up desk.

"I've personally found great benefits from having the flexibility to stand or sit while working, and don't believe a stand up desk should be a luxury," said Holmes. "Our intention with Oristand is to make it accessible to anyone wanting a flexible work station."
