CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - April 27, 2016) - Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), Chicagoland's leading independent recycling and waste diversion provider recently was awarded NAEP 2016 Environmental Excellence Award for Best Available Environmental Technology. This prestigious award recognizes LRS' investment in building an innovative, state-of-the-art single-stream recycling system in Chicagoland. NAEP awards are granted to companies and agencies with projects or programs that achieve outstanding environmental contributions.
"Our investment in the advanced single-stream recycling system and decision to not own nor operate a landfill, landmarks our efforts in continuing to create a more sustainable place to live for Chicagoland," said Lakeshore Recycling Systems CEO Alan T. Handley. "We are proud of this noteworthy achievement from NAEP and look to the future to aggressively invest in new technologies."
With this new machinery, LRS now controls and processes over two million tons of Chicagoland's outbound commercial and residential waste. This cutting-edge single-stream recycling system alone harvests over 110,000 tons of high-grade residential and commercial single-stream recyclables: plastic, glass, metals and paper, to generate a high quantity of recyclables for local and international outlets.
Single-stream recycling allows recyclable materials such as paper, glass, cardboard and plastic to be mixed, or co-mingled, in one container without being separated. LRS' highly functional single-stream facility increases Chicagoland's waste diversion rates as well as adds 100 new jobs to Cook County.
"We put in a great deal of effort to ensure that our single-stream recycling system is best in class, and the recognition from NAEP reiterates our dedication to preserving the environment," said Managing Partner Richard Golf.
Special recognition of LRS team members who contributed to achieving this honor include, Alan T. Handley, Joshua B. Connell, Richard Golf, Jerry J. Golf and Meaghan Johnson.
