Mondotrack/WS, track of 2016 Olympics, will be used for adidas Boost Boston Games Charles Street race

BOSTON, June 15, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- When Olympic medalists, world champions and other elite athletes take their marks on Charles Street in Boston this Saturday for the second day of the adidas Boost Boston Games, they’ll have a Mondotrack/WS track underfoot. Mondotrack/WS also will be used for the track and field competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Mondotrack/WS is the latest version of Mondotrack, the competition surface that was used at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. Made by Mondo, the global leader in the track and field, indoor sport and contract flooring markets, Mondotrack/WS was specifically designed for superior athletic performance, providing the optimum blend of energy return and comfort for sprints as well as middle- and long-distance events.

The new track features an innovative internal skeleton in the surface layer and a three-dimensional network of deformable elements, which together provide controlled composition and elasticity.

The adidas Boost Boston Games will be held over two days. Friday’s competition, at Somerville’s Dilboy Stadium, will showcase world-class middle- and long-distance stars. Saturday’s competition, featuring sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters, and long jumpers, will be held on Charles Street, between Boston Common and the Public Garden, on a specially constructed Mondotrack/WS track.

The meet, which essentially replaces the former adidas Grand Prix in New York City, will be televised nationally. It is geared toward building interest in track and field in the months before the Olympic Games and is a key tune-up for many athletes who are bound for Rio de Janeiro.

About Mondotrack/WS

The non-directional surface texture of Mondotrack/WS features enhanced slip-resistance and traction so shoe spikes are not required to penetrate the track for excellent grip in wet or dry conditions. This boosts the athlete’s performance by cutting the time and energy required for spike penetration and retraction. Shallower spike penetration also causes the track surface to deflect and recover, acting like a bowstring to literally launch the athlete away from the surface and increase stride length.

The bottom layer of Mondotrack/WS consists of an elongated honeycomb-shaped geometric construction, deformable in three dimensions, that provides the optimum blend of cushioning and energy return, as well as the optimum reaction time, depending on the type of stress generated by the athlete. As the athlete's foot impacts the surface, the cell walls deform, minimizing impact force and converting the maximum amount of kinetic energy into stored energy, which is released back to the athlete upon leaving the surface.
