WATERLOO, ON--(Marketwired - June 28, 2016) - D2L, a global learning technology leader, today announced a unique education partnership in Libya with MEDA, a renowned global development organization. Using D2L's Brightspace learning platform, thousands of female entrepreneurs across Libya will have access to business education courses on mobile devices with personalized learning, social content, analytics and game-based courses.
MEDA was chosen by USAID in 2012 to embark on The Libya Women Economic Empowerment (LWEE) project, a program to bring women together to get training, mentorship and to build an entrepreneurial community.
However, since 2014, growing instability and safety concerns in the region has made it more difficult for women to travel to attend meetings and classes. MEDA therefore chose Brightspace, the easy, flexible, and smart learning platform to create and deliver the material through rich digital formats.
MEDA is now able to deliver Arabic-based and culturally respectful online versions of the curriculum including marketing, accounting and business plan development. The platform's mobile-first design works across a wide variety of devices and can provide both online and offline content for use in low-connectivity environments. A pilot has recently commenced to about 300 women with a goal of making training available to over 600.
"This partnership with D2L is crucial for our continued support of women entrepreneurs and small business owners in Libya. The impact is not just felt with the entrepreneurs, but also with their families, employees as well as the community," said Helen Loftin, Senior VP of Marketing and Communications at MEDA.
For D2L, supporting female small business owners in Libya fits into its organizational mission to transform the way the world learns. "D2L is thrilled to partner with MEDA to enable high quality education for these talented entrepreneurs. This is an inspiring project for our team and a great example of mobile learning transforming our communities," said John Baker, CEO of D2L.
D2L currently serves learners in 50 countries, and the company's track record of innovation has been widely recognized. In March, Fast Company Ranked D2L #6 on the Most Innovative Companies of 2016 list in the Data Science Category, amongst Google, IBM, Spotify, Costco, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. eLearning Magazine recently rated D2L as #1 in Adaptive Learning, and Brightspace was recently named the #1 LMS in Higher Ed by Ovum Research.
