SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 2, 2016) - Many plastic surgeons agree that fat cells cannot spontaneously reproduce; they can only increase or decrease in size. As a result, Sacramento plastic surgeon Charles Perry, MD says liposuction offers permanent results in certain cases. This is considered to be one of the many benefits of the procedure; however, he says it is also important to understand that body contour could change in the event of weight gain. Since each person's anatomic response to weight gain will vary, Dr. Perry recommends individuals maintain a stable weight after treatment for best results.
During liposuction, fatty tissue is removed from targeted locations to enhance body contour and proportion. Dr. Perry says that weight gain following fat removal could lead to one of two possible outcomes. He says fatty tissue in untreated regions may expand in size and spread to treated areas, or, alternatively, it may expand and not spread to the treated areas. In either event, the Sacramento plastic surgeon says individuals may see changes in their body shape. Dr. Perry says another liposuction treatment often can be performed to correct these changes if the patient desires.
Dr. Perry says that it is important to evaluate patients' health and cosmetic goals to determine if they are ideal candidates for liposuction. However, he indicates that there is no way to predict whether an individual will gain weight following treatment nor whether the weight gain will or will not spread to treated areas. Dr. Perry says this should not be a major concern for most people, as an experienced plastic surgeon often can contour the body in such a way as to minimize the risk of uneven fat distribution should an individual put on weight. Additionally, he says patients who desire optimal results can exercise regularly, eat a nutritious diet, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the best possible outcome long-term.
