BOSTON, Aug. 23, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Patient Safety Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit organization that has served as a central voice for patient safety since 1997, today released a newly revised edition of its comprehensive NPSF Online Patient Safety Curriculum.
Featuring a foreword by Dr. Lucian Leape, a founder of the modern patient safety movement, and lectures by some of the most distinguished experts leading the field today, the Curriculum is a 10-module, online course that provides a history of the patient safety field, describes the science and disciplines of safety, presents current best practices, and outlines strategies for overcoming barriers to safe care.
Content for the new, globally relevant edition has been fully revised and includes three new subject areas:
- Patient safety across the continuum of care
- Workforce safety and restoring joy and meaning to work in health care
- An introduction to human factors and simulation

The online platform is designed for users to learn at their own pace through audio/presentation lectures, reading materials, and quizzes that help users test their knowledge. It is appropriate for any and all levels of clinical staff, as well as risk managers, health executives, and board members of health care organizations.
Since 2012, when the NPSF Patient Safety Curriculum was first released, thousands of health professionals have used it to enrich or renew their knowledge of the field. The Curriculum is accredited for Continuing Education (CE) for nursing, pharmacy, quality, and risk management, Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) recertification credits.
In 2013, the NPSF Curriculum became the first externally produced national patient safety program accepted for consideration by the American Board of Medical Specialties® (ABMS®) to bring patient safety education to physicians participating in the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®).
