CULVER CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 30, 2016) - DataScience, Inc., a data analytics company, today announced a new capstone event to mark the culmination of its inaugural DS12 data science education residency program. The one-day event, held September 2, 2016 at DataScience's Los Angeles headquarters, will feature highlights from the program's 12-week intensive course, talks by program instructors and in-depth presentations from students on coursework and their final capstone data projects.
"DS12 was designed to train and develop highly-skilled data scientists to work on big data teams at the world's leading enterprises. These students are already considered experts in the industry, and we embed them within our teams to provide practical, real-world experience handling massive data sets," said Ian Swanson, CEO of DataScience. "It's an extremely intensive process, and even highly talented applicants won't necessarily make the cut. By hosting the capstone event, we want to celebrate the great work these students have achieved, and encourage other data scientists to further their own skill sets."
Of nearly 500 initial applicants, 9 were ultimately selected to participate in the inaugural class, receiving tuition-free training from DataScience's experts and guest mentors through lectures, tutorials and labs. DS12 students hail from different countries around the world, including the Czech Republic and Taiwan, and almost all hold advanced degrees in a variety of subjects from computer science to physical chemistry. Working together as part of a big data team, students were able to share skillsets across their diverse backgrounds to solve functional programming challenges.
Unlike traditional data science bootcamps, lessons in DS12 are taught entirely in Scala and Spark, which are favored by major data science teams for processing complex terabyte-scale data sets. During the event, students and instructors will present lessons and challenges from the 12-week course, including a detailed overview of a predictive traffic modeling framework using GraphX and construction of complex SQL pipelines using Spark SQL.
"Before graduating from the program, our students are required to complete a four-week intensive capstone project, designed to test their functional programming and distributed computing skills," explained Chris McKinlay, DS12 Director. "Working in groups, students analyzed traffic data from Waze and the city of Los Angeles as part of the city's VisionZero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2025. In doing so, the program aims to develop a predictive traffic incident model, which the city's developers can use to model new construction projects and better inform their planning decisions. We're proud that DS12 students are able to further develop their skill sets while working towards such an important initiative."
Final results from the capstone project will be presented by the students live during the event, September 2, 2016 at DataScience headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. A live-stream of the event will be available online. Also available are full DS12 classroom lectures free to the public on the DataScience blog.
