But when leaks are in their earliest stages, they can be hard to locate. However, even the tiniest leaks create a friction that can be "heard" and "seen" with the Spectroline® Marksman™II ultrasonic diagnostic tool (MDE-2000NC). It pinpoints leaks (as small as 0.004 in/0.1 mm) wherever they are, before they become big problems.
The Marksman II uses heterodyne technology to diagnose aviation leaks easily by:
-Detecting their exact location
-Converting their friction into soundwaves
-Amplifying their inaudible ultrasonic emissions into sounds that can be heard.
The Marksman comes with headphones. An Internal Noise Control feature shuts out ambient clatter, while the Automatic Gain Control circuitry boosts signal sensitivity. But don't expect to hear just beeps. Because leaks are translated into natural and recognizable sounds:

-Grinding components make a distinct "growl"
-Electric shorts "crackle" like bacon frying
This tool is engineered to find leaks even under noisy, static testing conditions. In addition to its unique noise cancelling/signal boosting technology, the Marksman has a 5-LED signal intensity indicator. The louder the sound and the more lights seen-the closer the leak. This two-tier approach ensures a fast and accurate diagnosis every time in brakes, vacuums, tires and all closed systems.
All this technology makes the Marksman simple to use and comes housed in a light (1.5 lb./680 g), rugged, slim and ergonomic wand. Three different probes (2 detachable) can be used for:
-Built-in proximity probe enables up-close inspection of peripheral components
-Hollow flexible air probe reaches isolated leaks in cramped areas
-Solid contact probe finds wear on damaged gears and internal components - without disassembling
AMTs know that at 10,000 feet even leaks in non-pressurized systems are hazardous. That's why the Marksman II also comes with a unique ultrasonic emitter. Smaller than a deck of cards-when used with the wand attachments-it locates leaks in faulty seals, gaskets and weather stripping (in doors, windows, ductwork and other enclosures). Just turn it on and place it near the suspect seal. If the emitter detects a leak, it will transmit the location to the wand.
The included two D batteries ensure up to 165 hours of portable usage of the Marksman II (emitter powered by 1 nine-volt).
