WATERLOO, Ontario, April 25, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TextNow, the company disrupting the traditional mobile phone carrier model, today announced it has appointed Sean McCabe to serve as Chief Technology Officer. In this role, Sean will lead TextNow’s Engineering organization, where he will be responsible for product development, quality and technical infrastructure. He will manage a team of approximately 60 engineers in both Waterloo, Ontario and San Francisco, California, and work closely with CEO, Derek Ting, on TextNow’s business roadmap and long-term strategy.
Sean joins TextNow from Aeryon Labs Inc., the small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) provider, where he has served as the Vice President of Engineering since 2013. Prior to that, Sean held a variety of leadership roles at BlackBerry, managing the product development and commercial introduction of mobile handsets across global markets over a ten-year period. Sean holds an Executive Master of Science in Technology Management from Wilfrid Laurier University.
“At TextNow, we are experiencing tremendous growth with more than 10 million monthly active users, revenue growth of 277 percent over the last 5 years and 45 percent employee growth since 2016. We are excited to welcome Sean to our leadership team and leverage his deep technology expertise and management experience,” said Derek Ting, TextNow’s co-founder and CEO. “We are looking forward to having someone of Sean’s caliber working alongside our teams to execute on our roadmap, and delivering on new innovative solutions to exceed the expectations of our customers.”
“So much of what we do as Engineering leaders is about technology, people and transformation. This can be a potent combination and when you get it right, magic happens. At TextNow, the team has so much of this foundation already in place,” said Sean McCabe, new Chief Technology Officer for TextNow. “With the incredible people and technology at TextNow, it is a privilege to be joining a team focused on the collective mission of transforming how the world communicates."
The TextNow Service
TextNow was created to provide a simpler, less restrictive cell phone service with a lower cost, more transparent wireless service model. To use TextNow, customers can download the TextNow app to any device—their own or a low-cost model from TextNow— or purchase a TextNow SIM Card that allows them to simply plug in and activate compatible phones. TextNow relies on an innovative hybrid network of Wi-Fi plus cellular, switching automatically to optimize cost and service, and eliminate disruptions and dropped calls.
TextNow offers several plans to meet user needs. A new promotion offers users one of the lowest rates available: 1.5 GB of 3G/4G data and unlimited 2G talk and text to the US and Canada for $13.50/month for the first month and $26.99/month after the first month. Users who need less high-speed data can opt for a plan as low as $13.99/month. There are no contracts and no fees for overages, activation or upgrades.
