VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - July 19, 2017) - The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch (CBABC) congratulates John Horgan on his swearing in as Premier of British Columbia.
CBABC also extends congratulations to all members of Premier Horgan's Executive Council including new BC Attorney General, the Honourable David Eby.
"In its campaign platform, the BC NDP committed to improving BC's justice system," said CBABC President, Michael Welsh. "For the system to work better and be more accessible for British Columbians, a healthy investment in legal aid funding and court services staffing is crucial, and so we look forward to the government taking action on its campaign platform commitments."
Key priorities for CBABC include working with the provincial government to achieve this increased funding for legal aid and court services and to better develop restorative justice and other initiatives. Stronger support in these areas means improved access to legal representation and broader access to justice for all British Columbians. Last February, CBABC released An Agenda for Justice, a position paper offering 30+ recommendations and reforms that can be translated into action by BC's government to create a substantial difference for businesses, communities and families throughout the province.
President Welsh continued, "We are encouraged by Premier Horgan's statement to offer families relief from high costs and fees. By keeping its campaign pledge to substantially increase funding for legal aid, our new BC government can deliver on its promise."
