SHOREHAM, Vt., Oct. 18, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WhistlePig announced today the launch of Boss Hog IV: The Black Prince, voted best whiskey in the world at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, beating out some of the world’s oldest Scotches. It is also the first rye whiskey ever to be finished in Armagnac casks from France. Aged for fourteen years, The Black Prince is the fourth edition of its renowned Boss Hog series, a periodic release of the brand’s biggest and best whiskey.
“With The Black Prince, our boldest and most innovative release yet, we’re proving that American whiskey can and will overcome the heritage brands of Europe,” said Raj Peter Bhakta, Founder and Chief Steward of WhistlePig. “It’s all the punch of rye, with a touch of French sophistication in one bottle.”
The Black Prince is the next step in WhistlePig’s innovative barreling program, finishing bold rye in European wine and spirits barrels. WhistlePig previously released their 12 Year Old World Cask Finish, which blended whiskeys aged in Port, French Sauternes and Madeira casks.
“When I first came across these Armagnac barrels, I knew we were on to something special,” said Dave Pickerell, Master Distiller of WhistlePig. “Single barrel, bottled at barrel proof, with no burn. If we think it can be exceptional, we’ll try it—and boy were we right in this case.”
The Black Prince is composed of 95% rye whiskey, finished in Armagnac barrels at the company’s farm in Vermont. It is bottled at barrel strength, at around 124 proof. The suggested retail price is $499.99.
Flavor Profile of The Boss Hog, The Black Prince:
