These 31 exceptional — and exceptionally rare — etchings are a magnificent combination of sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint, showcasing a full range of gray tonalities. The etchings of animals, birds and insects are considered a rare and beautiful example of Picasso’s graphic creations. Picasso, a known animal lover who was surrounded by pets (including a pet owl that he’d tamed to sit on his finger), created the first plates for Histoire Naturelle – Textes de Buffons in February, 1936.
Picasso’s publisher, Ambroise Vollard, died in 1939 before the book was completed. Subsequently, Roger Lacourière, Picasso’s master printer, pulled the prints for each etching between 1939-1942 and Vollard’s assistant, Martin Fabiani, assumed the reins of publisher. It was Lacourière who taught Picasso the sugar-lift aquatint technique which allowed Picasso to mimic the effect of brushstrokes in these etched images.

Picasso’s Buffons, are filled with charmingly depicted animals, often exhibiting characteristics either to be admired, or wary of, or both. The Horse is seen from behind and at a bit of a distance, reminding us never to walk behind a horse, or risk getting kicked. The Goat known for ‘eating anything’ munches on the garden plants. The Ostrich, known for its incredibly strong legs and running ability is depicted racing across the picture plane with swoosh shadows showing under its feet. The Hen is shown as the ‘Mother Hen’ with her chicks, while the Rooster stands tall, feathered, puffed, and in full strut.
