Mitochondrial assay breakthrough announced by Biolog

HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Biolog, Inc. announced today the launch of a new product line that enables a comprehensive scan of mitochondrial function.   Better technology for measuring mitochondrial function has, for many years, been on the wish list of researchers studying a wide range of human disorders. The new products, MitoPlate™ S-1 and MitoPlate™ I-1 are now available.

Mitochondria are organelles inside of human and other eukaryotic cells that produce most of the energy that cells need to survive and grow.  They are very complex and are coded for by more than 1100 genes that are dynamically regulated.  When different cell types have mitochondrial defects, it can lead to wide ranging energetics-related disorders including cancer and ageing, neurological disorders, metabolic disorders, and immuno-deficiencies.

Researchers have struggled to find good approaches to study mitochondria because they have lacked a comprehensive assay approach.  Biolog’s preconfigured 96-well MitoPlates provide powerful new analytical tools.  The MitoPlate S-1 measures metabolism of 31 substrates, most of which are metabolized via the mitochondria.  The MitoPlate I-1 measures sensitivity of the mitochondria to 22 diverse mitochondrial inhibitors.  Rate of energy production measurements are made and analyzed using Biolog’s OmniLog® instrument and companion software.  MitoPlates can also be read using any microplate reader that offers kinetic reading capability; thus, making these assays accessible to most laboratories.

According to Barry Bochner, Biolog’s CEO, the new MitoPlate product line adds a major new capability to Biolog’s existing Phenotype MicroArray™ product line.  Phenotype MicroArray technology provides thousands of live cell assays applicable to both microbial and human cells.  The new MitoPlate assays further expand Biolog’s broad and unique portfolio with permeabilized cell mitochondrial assays.  All of these assays can be read on the versatile OmniLog instrument.

Biolog will hold an informative MitoPlate webinar on January 23, 2018 at 10AM Pacific Standard Time.  Details of the webinar can be found on the Biolog Events Page at: http://info.biolog.com/WB-2018-01-23-MitoPlate-Webinar-LP.html
